The course targets Elasticsearch 9.4.3. Exercise examples use the public products dataset; other requests illustrate separate teaching indices and may require setup or privileges unavailable in the trainer. Responses are shortened fragments; scores may vary. Check deployment and license requirements for advanced features.

An unfinished query

In “wirel head” the final word is unfinished. A normal match query searches analyzed terms and does not automatically implement typeahead. search_as_you_type creates supporting representations, while edge n-grams index word beginnings. General n-grams support internal substrings at the cost of larger indices and more false candidates.

Suggestions and corrections

Completion suggester serves prepared weighted suggestions; it is a separate data model, not a replacement for full-text results. Term and phrase suggesters propose corrections, but the interface should distinguish a suggestion from silently rewriting a query. Brands and SKUs often need an exact path with controlled fuzziness.

Safe relaxation

For zero results, reduce word requirements, add typo tolerance or suggest a category. Access, sales-region and safety constraints must remain mandatory at every stage. First distinguish genuine absence from analysis errors or indexing lag. Record which recovery step succeeded and measure its quality and latency separately.

This teaching index models names for typeahead.

Catalog reasoning example

For “hea”, suggest names matching the partial input without automatically invoking costly correction and semantic models on every keystroke. Use client debounce and stale-request cancellation plus server limits. An older response must not replace a newer one. These measures do not change ranking theory, but make typeahead behavior predictable.

Answer before expanding each explanation.

1. How do edge n-grams differ from n-grams?

The former indexes beginnings; the latter can index internal fragments.

2. Is completion a normal match query?

No, it uses a specialized suggestion structure.

3. Can a tenant filter be relaxed?

No, access constraints remain in every fallback branch.

4. Why not fuzz every SKU?

Similar short codes may identify different products.

5. What should fallback measurement include?

Result quality and added latency.
