The course targets Elasticsearch 9.4.3. Exercise examples use the public products dataset; other requests illustrate separate teaching indices and may require setup or privileges unavailable in the trainer. Responses are shortened fragments; scores may vary. Check deployment and license requirements for advanced features.

Health and overload

Green means primary and replica shards are assigned; yellow lacks some replicas; red lacks some primaries. Health is not a latency metric or application correctness guarantee. Place replicas across failure domains. For rejected requests and circuit breakers, reduce pressure, bound concurrency and apply backpressure rather than retrying indefinitely.

The access boundary

Do not expose an administrative cluster endpoint publicly. Applications use scoped API keys or roles, with HTTP and transport protection appropriate to deployment. Trusted servers set tenant filters across search and aggregation branches. Document- and field-level security and other advanced features can depend on licensing: verify entitlement rather than assuming availability.

Recovery and upgrades

Replicas also copy accidental deletions, so they are not backups. Snapshots use a supported repository; copying the data directory is not a supported restore strategy. Test restoration separately and measure RPO and RTO. Before upgrades, check snapshot, client and plugin compatibility and the supported upgrade path; rollback must account for downgrade limitations.

Listing repositories does not prove that restoration has been tested.

Catalog reasoning example

Restoration checks should read sampled products, validate aliases and execute key queries, not merely observe a successful restore status. Snapshot repositories need access protection because backups contain customer data. Give the application minimal read permissions and keep indexing credentials separate. Tests and teaching operations must use isolated index names and must not delete shared data through broad wildcards.

Answer before expanding each explanation.

1. Does yellow mean total data loss?

No, primaries are available but some replicas are unassigned.

2. Why is a replica not a backup?

Accidental deletion is replicated too.

3. What should overload handling do?

Bound load and retries, apply backpressure and diagnose.

4. How do you validate a snapshot?

Restore it and validate data and search behavior.

5. Can DLS be promised without checking?

No, verify licensing and deployment support.

Module case study: Integration and operations

An analyzer must change without losing updates while the queue lags and some bulk items receive 429. Order load reduction, destination catch-up, validation, cutover and rollback.

Assessment criteria

Bound retries, handle bulk item failures, establish a change checkpoint, switch aliases atomically and test restoration independently of replicas.

Key takeaways

  • No, primaries are available but some replicas are unassigned.
  • Accidental deletion is replicated too.
  • Bound load and retries, apply backpressure and diagnose.
  • Restore it and validate data and search behavior.
  • No, verify licensing and deployment support.
